PTR record<\/strong>\u00a0essentially resolves an IP address to a fully qualified domain name (FQDN) or map a network interface\u00a0contrary\u00a0to what A<\/strong> record <\/strong>does.\u00a0PTR records\u00a0are\u00a0also called Reverse DNS records.<\/p>\n

They are deployed for rDNS (Reverse Domain Name System) lookup. It helps in obtaining hostname or domain of the IP.\u00a0The owner of the IPs is usually the ISP, the web hosting provider<\/a>, or owned group directly assigned\u00a0by\u00a0ARIN.<\/p>\n

Nowadays\u00a0almost all external mail exchange servers perform\u00a0reverse DNS (rDNS) lookups prior to\u00a0accepting messages originating from sending mail servers. \u00a0Hence, it is recommended to set rDNS for a mail server.<\/p>\n

By using the following commands in Linux we can check if there is\u00a0the PTR record set or not for any IP.<\/p>\n

# dig -x IP \u00a0 \u00a0 (Replace IP with the actual IP)<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

For Windows you can open cmd or PowerShell and run the following command to obtain the output.<\/p>\n

nslookup IP<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Firstly, the\u00a0reverse DNS zone need to be created on the authoritative DNS nameserver for the required IP.<\/p>\n

Say you are in control &\u00a0able to access \u00a0the authoritative nameserver, then the first step would be to\u00a0create a rDNS zone. It has be be in a specific format. It begins\u00a0with a portion of \u00a0IP address written backward followed by .in-addr.arpa.<\/em><\/p>\n

For instance\u00a0your IP addr \u00a0is 20.xx.x.xx<\/em>, you begin\u00a0by dropping the final octet (last set of numbers) to give you\u00a020.xx.x.<\/em><\/p>\n

Next, you need to reverse that fragment of the IP address giving you: x.xx.20.\u00a0Now, append .in-addr.arpa.<\/em>\u00a0to set the\u00a0reverse zone domain of:\u00a020.xx.x.<\/em>in-addr.arpa.<\/em><\/em><\/p>\n

– Creating PTR Record.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Once done with the creation of\u00a0zone file we can move ahead to create\u00a0the PTR record.<\/p>\n

Edit in-addr.arpa of the zone and f<\/em>or the Canonical Hostname, set\u00a0the domain name of your choice you would\u00a0want\u00a0the IP address to resolve to, for\u00a0example, myhostptr.domain.com<\/p>\n

Save the DNS zone file after you’ve set the PTR or rDNS. NOTE: it will take sometime for the propagation.<\/p>\n
