Next, login to your server by typing the below code on the command line:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"lang:default decode:true \">ssh user@mydomain.com<\/pre>\n<p>After this you will asked for your password. Generally, the user and the password are same as your FTP account but they might differ sometimes.<\/p>\n<p>Once logged in, browse the <strong>public_html<\/strong> directory present where WordPress is installed. Navigate to the sub-directory if you are using it. Then, type the below code to download the latest WordPress files:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"lang:default decode:true \">wget http:\/\/wordpress.org\/latest.tar.gz<\/pre>\n<p>Next, type the below code to decompress the file:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"lang:default decode:true \">tar xfz latest.tar.gz<\/pre>\n<p>Now, you will need to delete the wp-admin and wp-includes directories using the following commands:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"lang:default decode:true \">rm -rf .\/wp-includes\r\nrm -rf .\/wp-admin<\/pre>\n<p>Then move the new wp-admin and wp-includes directories to the root with the below commands:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"lang:default decode:true \">mv .\/wordpress\/wp-admin .\/\r\nmv .\/wordpress\/wp-includes .\/<\/pre>\n<p>Enter the WordPress directory with<\/p>\n<pre class=\"lang:default decode:true \">cd wordpress<\/pre>\n<p>Next, copy its content to the parent directory (i.e. root directory) by overwriting the old ones:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"lang:default decode:true \">cp -rpf -f * ..\/<\/pre>\n<p>Go back to the root directory by typing <strong>\u201ccd..\u201d<\/strong> and delete both the tar files you previously downloaded and wordpress directory using the below code:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"lang:default decode:true \">rm -rf .\/wordpress\/\r\nrm -f latest.tar.gz<\/pre>\n<p>Finally, you will just need to run the upgrade script on your WordPress install (i.e., domain.com\/wp-admin\/upgraded.php).<\/p>\n<h3>Upgrading WordPress via Softaculous<\/h3>\n<p>1. For this, tick the box besides <strong>Create Backup<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>4. Click on the <strong>Upgrade<\/strong> button.<\/p>\n<p>5. You will see a progress bar on the screen and when the upgrade process gets completed the following message will get displayed:<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Congratulations, the software was upgraded successfully.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>Deleting a WordPress Install Through Softaculous<\/h3>\n<p>Prior to starting with the deletion process, you will need to have an access to your hosting control panel.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Note:<\/strong> In case you have old WordPress install at <strong>example.com<\/strong> and one more site at\u00a0<strong>example.com\/othersite\/<\/strong> and if you click on <strong>Delete all Files<\/strong> button, it will delete everything right from\u00a0\u00a0the non-WordPress site at <strong>example.com\/othersite<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>1. Firstly, take the backup of your website. Since you have installed your WordPress CMS using <strong>Softaculous App Installer<\/strong>, you can remove WordPress within few clicks.<\/p>\n<p>2. Go to control panel and open <strong>Softaculous App Installer<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.milesweb.in\/hosting-faqs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/softaculous-1-min.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7162\" src=\"https:\/\/www.milesweb.in\/hosting-faqs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/softaculous-1-min.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"508\" height=\"187\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.milesweb.in\/hosting-faqs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/softaculous-1-min.png 508w, https:\/\/www.milesweb.in\/hosting-faqs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/softaculous-1-min-300x110.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 508px) 100vw, 508px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n3. Check that your FTP client is set up to view hidden files.<\/p>\n<p>2. Next, delete all files that start with <strong>&#8220;wp-&#8220;<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>3. Delete all directories that start with <strong>&#8220;wp-&#8220;<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>4. Delete the below files (if present):<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 htaccess<br \/>\n\u2022 index.php<br \/>\n\u2022 xmlrpc.php<br \/>\n\u2022 readme.html<br \/>\n\u2022 license.txt<\/p>\n<p>Now, only the files that you have uploaded will be available in the directory. If you still find the files there that you don\u2019t recognize, check them carefully as those might be placed there by a hacker. If you are confident that you won\u2019t require these files, you can delete them.<\/p>\n<h3>Deleting a WordPress Install Using SSH<\/h3>\n<p>1. Log into your server using <strong>SSH<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>2. Go to your <strong>WordPress install<\/strong> directory.<\/p>\n<p>3. Execute following command all on one line. This will delete all WordPress files:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"lang:default decode:true\">[server]$ rm wp-*;rm .htaccess;rm index.php;rm xmlrpc.php;rm readme.html;rm license.txt;rm -R wp-*<\/pre>\n<p><strong>Note:<\/strong> With this command all files will get deleted permanently and there is no way to recover them once you run the command. Confirm first if you wish to permanently delete all WordPress files prior to running this command.<\/p>\n<h3>How to Manually Manage Plugins?<\/h3>\n<p>You should always keep your plugins updated. This is to avoid being hacked. Check the below\u00a0article for instructions on keeping your plugins updated:<br \/>\n\u2022 Updating WordPress plugins<\/p>\n<h3>Updating Plugins via SSH<\/h3>\n<p>The WP CLI interface can be used to update plugins via SSH. Check the below steps to update plugins via SSH:<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s assumed that you are already connected to your server via SSH. Run the below command, here the plugin to be updated is Akismet. You will just need to replace the plugin name:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"lang:default decode:true \">wp plugin update akismet<\/pre>\n<h3>Disabling Plugins via FTP<\/h3>\n<p>You can also disable plugins via FTP with the below steps:<\/p>\n<p>1. Log into your server using FTP or SSH. (In this example Filezilla is used).<\/p>\n<p>2. Ensure that you have logged in to your WordPress site&#8217;s directory.<\/p>\n<p>3. Click on the <strong>&#8216;\/wp-content&#8217;<\/strong> directory. Here you will see the<strong> \/plugins<\/strong> directory.<\/p>\n<p>4. Change the name of the <strong>\/plugins directory<\/strong> to <strong>\/plugins_OFF<\/strong>. This will immediately disable all plugins.<\/p>\n<p>5.
