If you would like to assign additional permissions to some of your registered users in MediaWiki, it can be done with few simple steps:

To start with,

  • Login to the MediaWiki as admin.
  • On the left-hand side, click on Special pages.
  • If you have not created any user then you need to create a  new user.  To create a new user go to Login OR create account section and click on Create account.
  • In the username field enter the username as per your choice.
  • Enter the password in the Password field and re-enter the same password in the Confirm password section.
  • Now in the Email address text box enter the email address where you wish to receive the confirmation link and login details OR leave it blank as it is optional.
  • In the Real name section if you wish to then enter the name as per your choice otherwise leave it blank as it is optional.
  • Also, in this text box mention the reason for creating another account OR leave it blank and click on Create account button.
  • On the left-hand side, click on Special pages.
  • Navigate to the Users and rights section and click on User rights.
  • Now in the Select a user section enter the username that you want to modify and click on Load user groups button.
  • In the Edit user groups, you will find a checkbox in front of every user group.
  • Select the groups where you would like to add the user and in the Expires section, you can define the time.
  •  If you want to mention any reason then you can mention it or else leave it blank.
  • Click on the Save user groups.
  • After this, the user will have permissions and access to the selected groups.

So in this way, you can assign users to groups in MediaWiki.
